The unit we received has a pull up resistor to Vcc on pin 2, in addition to pin 2 being grounded. I suspect this is to provide one with the option of setting either state on pin 2. Tom's application note says pin 2 selects between a group of common AM or FM frequencies. We want 1253.25 MHz, so we want pin 2 grounded according to Tom's AN.

We're using a high-capacity (128 MB, 256 MB) CompactFlash card as a solid-state disk drive. A [[commercial CompactFlash adapter|LvTwoCompactFlash]] is mounted on a [[PC104 carrier board|LvTwoCompactFlash]] which holds the card in despite the high g's.

According to Glenn: the 53.219MHz crystal is multiplied by 24 to get 1.277256GHz. The NTSC video is AM modulated on the carrier, and takes up from DC to about 4MHz. The audio is FM modulated and is set at 4.5MHz with a bandwidth of around 10KHz. Altogether, that's about 4.8MHz of junk. Most video filters start at 6MHz out, so we can think of the whole thing as 6MHz of bandwidth. Since it's AM moduled, that's 6MHz on the upper and lower sidebands - since there's no filtering of the lower sideband, that gives us a final signal of 1.277256GHz +/- 6MHz.

Although this is a workable solution, we'll probably want to roll our own CompactFlash carrier to PC104 adapter in the future: we could use a locking CF connector, save weight in fasteners and PCB material, and possibly mount the 2mm cable directly to the PCB (thus removing one connector, which seems to be a good thing for aerospace applications).

The first test series using the 0.055" orifice also produced a flow rate that was too high, though by only 20%. At this point i wonder if the pressure transducer is giving an accurate reading. It seems reasonable to expect the measured values to be within 10% of the theory, 30% is just too high.
As an interesting side bar, the orifice outlet pressure during test series #2 was around 120psi. After finishing test series #2 we removed the 25ft hose and measured the the orifice outlet pressure, which dropped to about 11psi. So it looks like the pressure drop in the hose is substantial. During motor tests we use a hose of very similar diameter to connect the orifice outlet to the motor, but that hose is only 3ft long, so we think we're ok.

Tom discussed some new antenna ideas with us, and had some pretty intereseting ideas for new antennas, including a coaxial colinear antennas. He also urged us to pursue an actively tracked antenna mount, so that we could use very high gain dishes on the rocket. He had some links to motor control folks, so we're going to talk with them and see where this might go.

Briefly, the process of wrapping an antenna vs building it flat may be changing the geometry of the dielectric. We are definitely using the wrong slot impedance. We are using the impedance for an infinite flat slot in the limiting case of slot height small compared to the free space wavelength, whereas we should be using the same value for the cylindrical case. These will be close, but we don't have the exact values. Last, now that we are trying to really nail the dielectric value to better than 1% accuracy, we need good measurements of the test antenna dimensions. Lumped along with this should be some observations of the effect on resonant frequency produced while changing the curvature of the cylindrical antennas during testing. (We have now done some tests where the curvature was varied by simply opening up the gap in the cylindrical antennas. The maximum opening tested was about 5 inches. The effect on resonant frequency is consistently very small.)

Finally, the independence of the cylindrical antenna properties with respect to wrap-radius is interesting. Theoretically the resonant frequency should be mostly independent, but the effect of the vertical seam was unclear. Since it now seems that the exact radius has only a weak effect, we need to re-examine the analysis of the patch antennas for mistakes rather than complete omissions as we try to explain the observed differences between the flat and cylindrical test antennae (see the [[RedBlueGraph|news/2003-11-10-comm#RedBlueGraph]]). One interesting thing we learned here is that the cylindrical antennae seem to be thicker than the flat ones, maybe this will help.
